247 Comics Presents / Spotlight #1 is our first title published under our partnership with TOKYOPOP and Penguin Random House, and there’s a story behind why this one means so much to us.
The return of Terry Kavanagh
You may know Terry Kavanagh from his work on Marvel Comics Presents, or as the editor who put Barry Windsor-Smith on Weapon X, Alan Davis on Excalibur, and Stephen Platt on Moon Knight.
Terry and I met at Jae Lee’s panel at WonderCon 2024 (Terry also oversaw Jae’s run on Namor). Neither of us knew we’d end up partners at 247 Comics.
About a year before that, Brian Buccellato had told me the one thing 247 Comics was missing was an editor. I spent that year meeting editors and couldn’t find the right fit. The word “editor” had become a production and pipeline management role, and that wasn’t what I was looking for. I wanted a creative partner who could help our creators tell better stories.
A few things Terry said stood out to me. He didn’t believe in getting in the way of artists and writers, which runs against how most editors work today, coordinating between creators who often never meet each other even after years on the same book. Terry described his role as steward to the stories and shepherd to the artists. I’d spent 15 years as an artist manager, and I couldn’t have said it better myself: creators lead, we follow, so they can do their best work.
Two years later, I couldn’t be more thankful that Terry joined this journey. He’s become a real partner in shaping where 247 Comics is headed. This issue is the first of many ideas that emerged from that partnership.
What’s inside
247 Comics Presents / Spotlight is the result of countless hours Terry and I spent discussing how to give fresh voices and up-and-coming talent a platform, while also identifying legacy stories that lost momentum after the publishing partners who championed them moved on.
On the “Presents” side:
- CYBER LEAGUE by creator Anderson Carman, featuring three Daniel Warren Johnson incentive covers: 1:25 (trade dress), 1:50 (trade dress-free, colors by Mike Spicer), and 1:100 (DWJ Artist Edition) — plus a homage variant by crowd favorite MANIX

- CEMETERY OF THE MIND, an interactive voting concept kicking off with the first of four stories readers can vote to continue, by veteran creator and recent SDCC Inkpot Award recipient Howard Mackie and artist Chris Campana. This one leads into a reunion of the team behind Danny Ketch’s Ghost Rider.

- NEWMEN, remastered, led by Rob Liefeld (a creator who’s had more impact on why I do this than almost anyone), with art by Jeff Matsuda and early creative work from Image Comics’ own Eric Stephenson.
A NEWMEN manga variant by Mario Foccillo, known for his Absolute Batman manga variants

- SONS OF THE DEVIL, the critically acclaimed horror indie hit by Brian Buccellato (Kong vs. Godzilla vs. Justice League) and Tony Infante, with a terrifying manga variant by Hyde Zhang

Watch Rob talk about our NEWMEN exclusive here!
- Sandwiched between both sides: A bonus original short story, Larry Hama’s Devil’s Bridge — a rare piece Hama wrote, drew, and inked himself, from the creator behind our favorite runs on G.I. Joe and Wolverine.
There are also comic-shop-exclusive manga covers by Daisuke Kadokuni and Emily Yim.

Why TOKYOPOP?
If you’re already familiar with some of these stories, or wondering why we partnered with TOKYOPOP: the vision is to cross over the best manga artists with our American creative team. This issue is the start. More is already in progress.
Key dates
This is 247 Comics’ first title published through TOKYOPOP and Penguin Random House, which makes retailer pre-orders especially important right now.
If you’re reading this today, go put in a request at your local comic shop for 247 Comics Presents / Spotlight #1. Every copy counts.
If you’re reading this later, you have until September 21st FOC (Final Order Cutoff) to get your order in. Anything ordered before that date is included in our print run.
Not buying in stores right now? Spreading the word still helps. This is a big moment for us, and we’re excited to keep bringing you more from up-and-coming and legacy creators alike, with a real crossover between manga and comic art.
See you at the store on November 4th.
Onward and upward,
Carl Choi
